History · The Silk Road relay
How did silk reach Rome when nobody walked the whole road?
What you’ll see
No merchant ever walked the whole Silk Road. A bale of silk left Chang'an on one caravan, was sold at the next oasis town, then sold again, and again. Each trader carried it a few hundred miles and added a profit. By the time it reached Rome, silk was worth its weight in gold.
