Language · A word’s family tree
Why do father, padre and Vater sound alike?
What you’ll see
Six thousand years ago, people on the steppe said something like peter. As they spread, the word drifted. In Latin it stayed pater, then became padre and père. In the north, every p softened into an f: fadar, then father and Vater. One word, a whole family tree.
