What is the selfish gene?
What you’ll see
In 1976, Richard Dawkins turned the view of evolution around. Bodies, he wrote, are vehicles. What lasts are genes: stretches of DNA copied down the generations. A gene spreads if it makes more copies of itself, even through a body that helps others, since a sibling carries, on average, half your genes. Selfish genes can build generous animals.
