History · One layer at a time
How long did it take to build Rome?
What you’ll see
Rome began as a few huts of wood and straw on the Palatine hill, around seven hundred and fifty years before Christ. Each generation added something: walls, a forum, aqueducts, temples, a great arena. Eight centuries later, a million people lived there. Rome was not built in a day. It was built one layer at a time.
