How do headphones cancel noise?
What you’ll see
Sound is a wave of pressure. Noise cancelling headphones listen with a tiny microphone, then play the exact opposite wave: a peak wherever the noise has a dip. Added together, peaks fill dips and the two waves erase each other. It works best on low, steady hums, like a plane's engine, which are easy to predict.
