How did the Romans build roads that last 2,000 years?

What you’ll see

Rome connected its empire with more than eighty thousand kilometres of paved road. Surveyors sighted dead straight lines with a groma. Workers dug a trench a metre deep, then filled it in layers: big stones, gravel in lime, packed sand, and finally fitted paving slabs, curved so rain ran off. Some of those roads still carry traffic today.
